What will people think when they hear that Im a Jesus freak? What will people do when they find that its true? I dont really care if they label me a Jesus freak cause there ain't no disguising the truth. These lyrics sound familiar to you? They should!
DC Talk one of todays hottest Christian bands topped the charts with the song 'Jesus freak.' They have even co-authored a book by the same title with Voice of The Martyrs. The band that now has so many listeners got started in the late 1980's.
Toby Mckeehan, more commonly known as TobyMac, introduced himself to Michael Tait after Michael sang in chapel at Jerry Falwell's Liberty University. This was the start of a very important friendship. Toby and Michael started the group 'DC Talk and The One Way Crew' and released a 2-song demo tape titled 'Christian rhymes to a rhythm'
Not long after words, Michael introduced himself to Kevin Max (Kevin Smith at the time) after Kevin sang in chapel, and told him about his friend TobyMac. Soon the trio moved in together. 'DC Talk and The One Way Crew' caught the attention of ForeFront Records and in 1989 they signed with them and moved to Nashville, Tennessee without finishing college.
They then changed their name from 'DC Talk and The One Way Crew' to 'DC Talk.' The DC originally referred to Washington, DC but the record company promoted it to mean Decent Christian. Also in 1989 the group released a self-titled debut album. After ForeFront Records was bought out by EMI, they signed with Virgin Records (also owned by EMI.)

In 1991 they toured with Michael W. Smith as the opening act. In 1995 they released the CD titled 'Jesus Freak.' In its first week 85,000 units of CDs were sold. Soon they started to attract a larger audience and were topping charts. DC Talk has won many awards, including 18 CCM Readers Awards, 14 Dove Awards, and 3 Grammy Awards.
At the moment DC Talk is working on a solo project. Each member has released his own CD. Taits's CD is titled Empty, Kevin's (K-max) CD is titled Stereotype Be, and TobyMac's CD is titled Momentum. With each member out on his own fans can now get a taste of each of DC talk's members own style.
They were planning to do a Solo tour this fall but it has been postponed because of personal reasons on Kevin Max's part. Because of this and the fact that the group is doing solos there have been rumors that DC Talk is splitting up but these rumors have no truth to them. Many of the dates have been rescheduled for 2002.
DC Talk as 1 band and the 3 members with their own solos are truly Decent Christian Talk and worth checking out. I would greatly recommend their CDs and their book.
